WomenTech Educators Online Training Fellowship

Increase the Number of Female Students in your STEM Classes

Based on proven practices, the online curriculum includes the "best-of-the-best" of our strategies, culled from our 5 National Science Foundation (NSF) projects and 20 years of success helping educational institutions recruit and retain female students in STEM programs. Our work was highlighted by NSF for showing significant achievement and program effectiveness.

Note: Apply early as applications will be reviewed on a rolling admissions basis and the training fills quickly! The date you submit your Intent to Apply will be the start date on your application.

This fellowship is free for teams of 4-6 community college STEM educators. Preference will be given to teams connected with an ATE Project or Center.

You Will Take Away:

  • An easy-to-implement recruitment plan to greatly increase the number of women and girls in your STEM classrooms.
  • A retention plan for your program to increase the completion rate of your female (and male students), starting this semester.
  • The knowledge and confidence you need to put these plans into action, right away.
  • Plus: A certificate of completion and the option for a unit of continuing education credit from Fresno Pacific University.

Schedule/Time Required:

Time period: Training starts February 16, 2015. 5 weeks for recruitment training, followed by 5 weeks on retention with a 1-week break in the middle. A brief orientation takes place the week of February 9, 2015.

Hours required: About 2-3 hours per week. This can include the time to start implementing your team's plan and seeing results, even while the training is happening!

Training format: Presentations, handouts & exercises online, available to watch and complete at your convenience each week.

Live question and answer training calls the weeks of March 16 and April 27.

Exclusive online community forum to connect with other training participants.

After the training: Follow-up support includes live calls with your trainer on plan development and implementation.

Archives: All calls and sessions recorded and emailed out the next day.

Who Should Attend:

College-based teams of 4-6 participants consisting of administrators, instructors, counselors and outreach staff from STEM programs where female students are underrepresented.

The Power of Teams:

Experience and research show that participating as a team sets you up to be successful and see results. Your team will communicate as a single voice during this program. While team members may watch modules individually at their convenience, the team joins together weekly to synthesize and apply the information into a group assignment. These assignments build to create full recruitment and retention action plans by the end of training.

College Level IT Experiences for High School Deaf Students



This week, ATETV visits high school students at the Learning Center for the Deaf and captures their experiences as they participate in a college level IT class. Career and technology education is a big part of life at this school where a student can get involved as early as his or her sophomore year. The first year is exploratory and involves participating in various classes for the equivalent of two periods per day. Then, the student moves on to pick one particular class to focus on for the remaining years at TLC. This is an exemplary model of a dual enrollment program and a story you won't want to miss, so tune in today!

The New Workplace Currency Is Not Just Salary Anymore

Employers are learning that there are new rules for attracting talented millennials. A Cisco survey of more than 2,800 college students and young professionals in 14 countries found that the preference for social media freedom, device flexibility, and work mobility was more important than salary when considering a job offer. One in three college students and young employees under the age of 30 (33%) said that they would take lower pay for these choices.

NYT 5/29/11 Lockheed on the hunt for cybersecurity specialists

The rising need for cybersecurity specialists points towards a hot area in ICT. Here is a 1/11/11 video highlighting Lockheed's Cyber Security Day with Tech Council of Maryland: Stop Think Connect

Just two weeks ago, Lockheed advertised for a "lead computer forensic examiner" for the center, saying it needed someone who could work in a fast paced environment, understood "attack signatures, tactics, techniques and procedures associated with advanced threats," and was able to "reverse engineer attacker encoding protocols."

Womentech Educators now offers Online Training

Many people believe that students drop out due to low grades.

Would you be surprised to learn that the grade point average of women who dropped out of an engineering program at the University of Washington was 3.2? And what was the grade point average of women who were retained? Also 3.2. It turns out the biggest reason women drop out of STEM programs is not low grades, but low confidence.

Self confidence is a predictor of success for women and girls in technology courses. Studies have shown that men who fail a STEM course are likely to repeat it, while women who fail a course see it as the end of THEIR road in STEM. Now, how do we translate that insight into greater success for women in the classroom?

There are a menu of strategies that you can employ to make sure that the female students in your classroom have both the skills and the confidence they need to succeed. You'll learn these research-based strategies at the upcoming WomenTech Educators Online Training.
