Microsoft MVP Virtual Conference, May 14-15

Microsoft has a lot going on. Ignite was last week and Build the week before. 

This week is Microsoft’s MVP Virtual Conference, May 14-15, 2015, this Thursday and Friday. Presentations will be given in English, Spanish and Brazilian/Portuguese by native speakers from 8am to 6 pm (Pacific time.)

The event free and sessions will be recorded. Everyone is welcome to attend. – Share with your students and faculty.

Microsoft has a goal of getting Windows 10 on 1 billion computers within one year. Windows users with Windows 7 or Windows 8 can upgrade for free within the first year. This translates to opportunities for our students if they know Windows 10. Microsoft has commitments from several companies to upgrade to Windows 10. This means employers will be looking for students with Windows 10 experience to fill deployment and support positions.

Greetings!

On behalf of Steve Auerbach, PCATT Director, Monir Hodges, IT Summit Co-Chair, and Steve Singer, IT Summit Co-Chair, I am very happy to announce that registration is NOW OPEN for the 2015 PCATT IT Symposium, to be held at PCATT/Honolulu Community College, Thursday and Friday, May 21 and 22.

This is our 13th annual PCATT IT Symposium, with our widest array of presenters in technology education and educational technology to date. The theme for the conference this year is Securing Our Future through Technology and Education. Experts in cybersecurity, data science, gamification, networking, and application development will share with us during the keynote presentations and breakout sessions.

ACM SIGCSE Conference Recommendations

The ACM CCECC will be at SIGCSE 2015 and we'd like to connect with you! We encourage you to attend this Symposium dedicated to computing education and register by Feb 1 to take advantage of the early discount rate. The conference runs March 4-7 in Kansas City, MO.

We've gone through the extensive program and put together a list of sessions that we think community college educators will be interested in.

In addition, we're organizing a lunch Friday (March 6) for community college educators to connect with each other. We'll meet during the "Lunch on Your Own" time slot and head to a local restaurant in Kansas City. If you are interested, RSVP to Cara Tang at ctang@acmccecc.org​ by Thursday March 5.

Winter ICT Educator Conference Sessions Available Free Online in Real Time

If you're not one of the 260 people registered to attend the 2015 ICT Educator Conference this week in San Francisco, January 5-6, you can still join as an online participant. Four distinguished keynotes and 69 high-quality breakout sessions are all accessible via links in the conference agenda on MPICT's home page using CCC Confer. If you've never used CCC Confer, join your first session a few minutes early to allow time for browser app to load.

Not able to participate on Monday or Tuesday, or join all of the sessions you'd like? There will still be an opportunity to view the conference presentations on MPICT's YouTube channel. Microsoft creates new cert to make VMware admins 'bi-lingual'

Microsoft has found another way to grab some market share from VMware's: a new certification it says is designed “to help IT pros who are VMware experts build their expertise in Microsoft virtualization.”

Redmond's pitch is that IT professionals need to be “bi-lingual” when it comes to virtualisation, because while VMware does a very fine job “Over the last few years, Hyper-V has been going from strength to strength, leading to more and more organizations adopting this platform”

The Reg has encountered plenty of opinion to back that up: multi-hypervisor strategies got a fair bit of airtime once Windows Server 2012 all-but-matched the most-used bits of Vmware's flagship vSphere. Microsoft itself cites this Enterprise Strategy Group blog post that says 65 per cent of organisations run multiple-hypervisor-strategies. Author Mark Bowker offers the following opinion on such strategies:

“While there are a few examples I can point to where IT organizations are making a wholesale switch from one hypervisor to another, the majority of scenarios I see are IT maintaining their investment in its primary platform for the time being and starting to onboard an additional hypervisor for different application workloads, licensing/ cost reduction--by phasing out legacy products--or for the advanced technology capabilities of one solution over the other.”

That analysis provides a decent rational for Microsoft's “bi-lingual” argument and means Redmond's offer of a free online course and free exam for the new and prosaically-named “Microsoft Virtualization Certification” looks rather generous. Those who take up the course will get a grounding in Hyper-V and the System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager.

There is a sting in the tail: the pages spruiking the education and certification also mention virtual machine migration tools. The Reg can't say if those tools will be mentioned in the training or exam, but expects Microsoft isn't arranging the certification entirely out of kindness. ®
