CA Career Briefs: Model a Mentor

CA Career Briefs

Successful people turn everyone who can help them into sometime mentors.

Model a Mentor

Did you know?

Seventy percent of Fortune 500 companies include mentoring as a key component in their training agenda because they have learned that mentoring is critical to career development. Mentoring is typically defined as a relationship between an experienced and a less experienced person. The mentor provides guidance, advice, support, and feedback to the protégé or mentee. Whether in college, or a career or in a personal endeavor, mentors can speed the route to success. Today’s exercise will help students reflect on what they want from a mentor, and what they have to offer as a mentee.

Try this…

  • Ask your students to complete each of these sentences:
A mentor is …
A mentor can help you …
You get a mentor by …
  • Share your story of how a mentor helped you succeed.
  • View video.
  • Distribute Student Activity, review directions and complete.
  • Discuss the different strategies students will use to find a mentor.

Add an Experience!

Suggest that your students stop by the CaCareerCafe.com site for more information on mentors and a database of Professional Associations to connect them to the Experience Lesson – Mentor.
