CCC Information Security Services, Website

Last Updated on Thursday, 20 June 2013 Written by Sandoval Chagoya Thursday, 20 June 2013, TechEDge

The California Community Colleges Information Security Center now offers free vulnerability assessment and server monitoring services for CCC campuses statewide. The Information Security Center has also announced the launch of its new website.

Vulnerability assessment scans can help discover vulnerabilities before they are exploited by criminals. Examples include the following:
  • Vulnerabilities that allow a remote hacker to control or access sensitive data on a system.
  • Misconfiguration (e.g., open mail relay, missing patches, etc.).
  • Default passwords, a few common passwords, and blank/absent passwords on some system accounts.
  • Denials of service against the TCP/IP stack by using mangled packets.
Server monitoring is also offered for Internet facing servers at California’s community colleges. This service is meant to supplement existing server monitoring systems, not replace them.
More information about these free services, the center's CCC information security mailing list, and ways that CCC information technologies staff can get involved is available from the center's new website at www.cccsecuritycenter.org.
Funded by a grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office, the CCC Information Security Center, hosted by Butte College, facilitates and coordinates the work of the CCC systemwide information security initiatives.<>
