How to encourage female students to consider STEM programs

For many female students in high school or college, careers in science, technology, engineering or math are just not on their radar screens.  They can't picture themselves in occupations like information technology, construction, or engineering. What can educators do to help women and girls realize that careers in STEM can be a fulfilling and rewarding choice?

The first step is to introduce female students to images of female role models on the job.  When female students repeatedly see images like those in the banners of women looking happy on the job and working with equipment, they can start to see themselves in these career pathways.

Where is the best place for female students to see these images? The answer is: everywhere! Seeing them repeatedly helps imprint images of female role models on the minds of your female and male students.

Hang the banners all over your campus in classrooms, hallways, libraries, lunch rooms, student lounges and counseling offices. Plus, bring them to events. Every career fair, student orientation, and student recruitment event can have a women in STEM table with banners to send a strong message that women are not only encouraged, they are celebrated for pursuing STEM career pathways at your school.
