Hartnell College CS Instructor Opportunity

About the Program 

Hartnell College seeks an innovative computer science instructor, dedicated to excellence in teaching, who desires to become part of a creative, vibrant, student-centered community. We seek a faculty member who is a professionally active scholar and who participates in departmental and campus-wide planning to enhance the discipline, promote interdisciplinary discourse and collaboration, and advance the college mission. Hartnell College offers certificates and associate degrees in computer science with emphases in programming and networks & security. The CS programs are committed to preparing students for transfer to 4-year institutions and to providing training for students wanting to expand or improve upon their current level of knowledge and skills in computing. Faculty are actively involved in the development of internship opportunities for students, curriculum development to ensure relevance of instruction, providing workshops to the community at large to enable local workers to use computers, and offering workshops for students at local middle schools and high schools to encourage their consideration of computer science as a career path.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Position 

The Hartnell Community College District is currently accepting applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position beginning in the 2012-13 academic year. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in the Computer Science and Information Systems disciplines. This includes, but is not limited to: programming fundamentals, object-oriented programming, data structures, computer architecture and assembly language, operating systems, and discrete structures. Faculty are expected to actively participate in curriculum development, revision of instructional materials, and development and assessment of learning outcomes. Collegiality is essential for ongoing development of departmental and divisional missions and objectives.

Additionally, we expect the chosen candidate to fully participate on committees involving academic, professional, and student development. The faculty will fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member, including, but not limited to: remaining current with industry and discipline advancement, revising program and course curricula to maintain relevance, and teaching scheduled classes; following the course outline; keeping accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; posting and maintaining scheduled office hours; and participating in departmental meetings. The assignment may include day, evening, and weekend hours, and classes off campus. Recruiting students and educational community service will also be integral responsibilities.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.
  • A Master’s in computer science or computer engineering OR
  • Bachelor’s in either of the above AND Master’s in mathematics, computer science or computer engineering.
  • The equivalent. (Applicants applying for equivalency consideration must submit an Equivalency Request Form for committee review.)
  • Prior teaching and/or industry training experience.
  • 1Meeting minimum and desired qualifications does not assure any candidate an interview.
Desired Qualifications
  • Significant programming work experience.
  • Programming experience with modern scripting languages.
  • Programming experience in the areas of software and computer security and/or machine architecture.
  • Community college teaching experience that:


  1. employs “hands on” or “project based” learning methods.
  2. evidences working knowledge of instructional techniques used to increase student learning in software development.
  3. demonstrates a working knowledge of instructional techniques and delivery methods such as online education, podcasting, digital technology, etc.


  • Commitment to inclusion of emerging technologies in course instruction
  • Commitment to expanding opportunities for underrepresented groups in computer science
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of the CS instructional team
Hiring Range and Benefits

  • $51,814 to $70,124 annually based on 175 days.
  • Within this salary range, the successful candidate’s starting salary will be
  • based on verified education and experience.
  • District- paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for employee and a high percentage of coverage for eligible dependents.

  • STRS (State Teacher Retirement System).
