Update on SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC)

This update is from Gary Page

Teacher/Administrator:

This is to let you know there are significant steps being taken in
Sacramento to promote and integrate instruction for both college and career
at the high school level.

In terms of assessment, it was recently announced that California will
become one of 18 governing states in the 30-state SMARTER Balanced
Assessment Consortium
. It is most closely identified with one of its chief advisers, Stanford University School of Education Professor and author Linda Darling-Hammond, an advocate for teachers and a sharp critic of the current generation of standardized tests. Here is a link to the full announcement from Tom Torlakson's office:

Proposed legislation, SB547<http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=sb_547&sess=CUR&
house=B&author=steinberg
> (Steinberg), would allow a "variety of indicators" to be used in assessing school performance. This approach would measure and put more value on both "college and career" preparedness in determining a school's academic performance.
